What’s been happening
One Health and Prevention across global health summits
In May, the World Federation for Animals joined two pivotal global health events – the World Health Assembly in Geneva and the WOAH General Session in Paris – to advocate for a One Health approach that places animals at the heart of prevention. From the adoption of the historic Pandemic Agreement to renewed commitments on veterinary vaccines, antimicrobial resistance, and animal welfare standards, these moments underscored the urgent need for ethical, inclusive, and science-driven global health governance.
UN Ocean Conference 2025: Key outcomes for marine animals
The third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) concluded with a new political declaration encouraging progress on ocean sustainability. The text included positive references to issues like marine plastic pollution and the need for sustainable fisheries, alongside support for the 30×30 biodiversity targets and a call for countries to consider ratifying the High Seas Treaty. However, several gaps remain. The declaration does not outline specific actions to phase out harmful fishing practices, nor does it fully recognise the role of marine animals in climate mitigation. Issues such as underwater noise pollution, deep-sea mining, and broader animal welfare concerns received limited or no mention.
